Teaching Contract Summer of 2009-Summer of 2010
Attendance
I’ve scheduled 36 weeks of lessons between Sept. 1st, 2009 and June 12th, 2010.
The exact dates of the terms are available from me and are also on my studio website,
listed above. If you have to miss a lesson, and you inform me at least a week ahead
of time, I will do my best to reschedule that lesson. I cannot promise make-up
lessons for a lesson which a student has to miss. Per the signing of this contract, the
parent or party responsible for the student agrees that every effort will be made to
help a student arrive on time at his or her regular lesson. Per the signing of this
contract, I, Krista Broadway Swider, will not be held responsible for making up any
missed lesson for which I am not notified at least one week beforehand. As a
professional musician I occasionally have performance engagements that conflict
with my teaching schedule. I will reschedule lessons that I cancel.
Responsibility
Per the signing of this contract, parents and/or guardians agree to respect my
personal property and to help their children to the same. Per the signing of this
contract, parents and/or guardians agree that should any kind of physical accident or
other harm befall a child while he or she is in my home, I, Krista Broadway Swider, will
not be held financially or in any other way responsible for any accident.
Practicing
Students are expected to commit to daily practicing. Young and beginning students
should check off tasks they complete each day in a notebook, with parental
supervision. Older students should record their daily practice time as well. Per the
signing of this contract, I, Krista Broadway Swider, reserve the right to terminate
lessons with students who demonstrate a consistent lack of practice.
Recitals
There will most likely be both a Fall and Spring recital; the location is Bethel Christian
Fellowship in St Paul and the dates are TBA. A professional pianist will be hired to
accompany the students and a rehearsal arranged. Students will be expected to pay
a fee to the accompanist.
Tuition
For those of you who pay tuition at the beginning (first week of) the term, you will
receive tuition at the discounted rates noted on my website. (30 min. lessons for 9
weeks = $180, 45 min. lessons for 9 weeks = $270, 1 hr lessons for 9 weeks = $360). If
tuition is submitted after the first week of a term, please add $10. Every student must
pay by 3 weeks into the term, or lessons may be temporarily discontinued. Even if a
student’s lessons are put on hold, he or she will owe tuition for each lesson in the
term.

February 2010: Practice Contest Month
This year the Practice Contest is designed to encourage CONSISTENCY. Students will be awarded stickers to be placed on a chart,
based on how MANY days they practice. They will receive an extra sticker for memorized solo performances that involve an audience of 3 or
more. An extra sticker will also be awarded for auditions conducted in front of a judge. In my book, “practice” is defined as a period of
time in which an individual works alone or with a parent to focus on goals set in their lessons. Remember that February has 28 days! Those
students who reach 28 stickers will receive a prize. The top three sticker-earning students will be awarded special prizes based on their
ranking (1st, 2nd or 3rd prize), and the students’ wish-lists. Happy Practicing!!!
March 2010: Metronome Month
Get it out, dust it off, and maybe replace the batteries! The challenge this month is to use your metronome every day that you
practice. While it is Easy to Forget to use the metronome, It is essential to a student’s education and learning process. Beep, Click,
Click, Click. Beep…
April 2010: Practice Performance Month
Sure students practice playing their pieces, maybe even with a parent! But how often do we practice performing? Did you know that
the field of violin, viola, and chamber music is referred to as the “Performing Arts”? Music is a wonderful thing to play for oneself, but
sharing it with others is so important! When we invite others to enjoy the music we love, we discover a whole new communication form – the
language of music.
A practice performance can be held anywhere and must include at least 3 audience members. There should be minimal distractions and the
performer should play from memory if at all possible. Students, don’t perform in your Pajamas. You don’t have to wear a tux or formal
dress, but think about the fact that your audience is doing you a favor by listening to you and you want to show them the upmost
respect… so dress decently, no slouching, and don’t forget to give a formal bow both before and after!
May 2010: Mock Audition Month
Mark your calendars for Sunday, May 2nd 2010 – our Mock Audition day. Let me know in advance if you need an earlier or later
time, but I’ll have a sign-up sheet closer to May. Students should be dressed appropriately for an audition (Dress Shirt and tie for guys,
dressy slacks, skirt or dress for girls), I will listen to scales, sight-reading and a prepared, memorized piece. I may have a second judge to
offer opinions and comments. Mock Audition day is designed to provide students with a chance to prepare material essential for their
growth as musicians, to experience the audition scenario and audition nerves, and to get feedback/comments on their playing.
June 2010: Recital Month
Recital Month is just as it sounds… the Recital will most likely be held on the evening of Monday, June 7th, location TBA. I will
give out further information concerning the recital in the near future.
July 2010: Guest Artist Month
A guest artist will give a master class to which I strongly suggest all of my students attend. The master class performers will be
those among my students who are more aptly prepared with their solo pieces. There is also a possibility that a chamber group might perform
in the master class. I’ll announce the artist’s name and the date of the master class as soon as possible.
August 2010: Discover a Composer Music
Have you ever been drawn to the life and music of a particular composer? Is there a composer whose music you struggle to understand,
or a composer whom you find fascinating? This assignment is to research a composer you don’t currently know much about, and write or
type a page on his or her life and music.
September 2010: Music Theory Month
It is difficult to fit music theory into lesson time when we have scales, etude books, method books and other pieces, in addition to
learning technique! This September, I’d like my students to take a closer look at some of the essentials of music theory. I’d like my students
to be able to answer questions like, “What key are we in?” and “How many sharps does B major have?” or “How does one draw the circle of
fifths?” For more advanced students, we’ll try to tackle more complicated issues. Remember:
Fat Cats Go Down Alleys Eating Birds (F, C, G, D, A, E, and B – the order of Sharps)
October 2010: Discover a Piece Month
This month should be an awesome chance for students to discover a piece they have never heard. Under my guidance, the students
should pick a piece or a composer (or both), that they take a liking to and purchase either an mp3 of the recording (via amazon.com or
itunes), or a CD (via Half Price Books, Cheapo, or Amazon.com shipped to you… etc.) The student will also need to get the music for
their piece, whether that is through imslp.org (a free-domain music website), the Library, or Groth Music, etc. The piece does not have to
be at the same level a student is currently at. It can be at a very difficult level, or something very simple, but the student needs to have
the sheet music and the recording to properly explore the piece. I will ask students to listen to the piece many times and follow along with
the score (sheet music). I would like students to then conduct a bit of research (Wikipedia.org is often helpful) write a ½ page report on
their thoughts about the piece… what key it is in, what emotional character the piece has, a little about the composer, etc.
November 2010: Attend a Concert Month
Attend a concert month. This is a chance to hear your peers, a professional soloist, chamber group, or an orchestra. The concert
doesn’t qualify if you are participating in it; instead you must be a focused audience member. After the concert, please write a ½ page
report, staple it to a copy of the program, and turn it in to me.
December 2010: Give the Gift of Music Month
It’s time to get creative about how you as a student can share your music with the people around you. The object of this month is to
surprise someone, reach out to someone, bless someone, and perhaps surprise yourself by performing on your instrument for someone else.
Enjoy!
